Despite being commonly referred to as a river this is actually a large lagoon with a notable wetland that covers 915 hectares. The wetland and Madu Ganga are famous for their biodiversity and have many estuaries and mangrove islets forming a complex ecosystem.

The Main Islets

There are two main islets within the lagoon named Maaduwa and Kothduwa, and the prior is the larger of the two. The latter, however, has a Buddhist shrine on it which is over a century old. The combined landmass of the two islands provides shelter for more than 400 families.

These islets are also home to some fascinating local industries, especially concerning cinnamon. The peeling of cinnamon, as well as the production of cinnamon oil, can be experienced during a trip to this region. Fishing is also a significant livelihood of the locals.

Procuring a Safari

A Madu Ganga safari can be easily procured through a variety of providers. You can easily discover one to meet your requirements by browsing a Kalutara travel guide. There are plenty of examples to choose from, such as Travel Kalutara.
