History

The grand mansion once belonged to a regional governor or a mudaliyar in native terms by the name of Padikara Muhandiram. The Richmond Castle was built during the turn of the century in 1890 and drew inspiration from a majestic palace in India which belonged to one of the governor’s friends.

How to Get There

The castle is located just 3 km away from the city centre in a picturesque village called Thekkawatta. It also can be reached from many hotels in Kalutara including the likes of Anantara Kalutara Resort easily according to popular travel directories such as Travel Kalutara.

Architecture

Featuring a unique blend of Palladian and Edwardian influence, the sprawling castle sits upon a 42- acre land lush with spice and fruit groves. The interior of the home contains 15 rooms, a spacious audience hall and one of a kind alloy staircase with intricate designs. Gleaming teak wood floors, exquisite stained-glass windows, and moldings are constant features throughout the property.

Important Tips

The site is open to the public from 08.00 a.m. to 04.00 p.m. to the public. Consider paying a visit during the weekend as opposed to weekdays since it tends to get busy as it’s among top popular attractions in Kalutara. Entrance tickets can be purchased by the gate for LKR.500; the proceeds which go towards orphaned children.
