Thudugala Ella is considered one of the unique waterfalls in kalutara district. The estate where the waterfall is located in was once owned by a British national and the ruins of the estate still remain. The waterfall collects at the bottom to make a natural swimming pool before it parts and some unique plants and creepers can be found in the vicinity. The unique part of the waterfall is the tunnel that runs below the fall and comes out on the side at the top of the waterfall.

The walk or trek begins at the Katukurunda Junction off Galle Road, follows the Matugama Road to the Thudugala junction and about 12km down the road is the waterfall.

You can also reach the waterfall by walking through the derelict British estate. A signboard at the junction will point you to the estate, so no worries about being lost and clueless here.

Upon reaching the waterfall you’ll come across a massive dilapidated building which had been the residence of a British officer once owned the estate.

The fall is famous for its bathing pool and the forest reserve close to the waterfall is a major pull for adventurers who visit this part of the island. The view from the waterfall is mesmerising, with endless lush green forests and colourful birds perched on the tree branches.
