Not only do resorts in Kalutara offer ideal coastal getaways, but also a chance to experience true holistic healing at onsite spas. Here are some of the signature treatments you can look forward to.

Spa in Kalutara
Anantara Kalutara Spa

Shirodhara Treatment

Based on the age-old traditions of Ayurveda, Shirodhara can be experienced at a spa in Kalutara. This treatment entails having a special herbal oil continuously flow onto your forehead. Helping to relieve stress, nourish the scalp and hair and improve memory, it also improves circulation to the brain.

Abhyanga Treatment

Another Ayurveda-based therapy, Abhyanga involves warm herbal oil being used in a revitalising full body massage. Available at properties the likes of Anantara Kalutara Resort, this treatment extends from the feet right to the base of the head to stimulate inner balance through the pressure and rhythm of the massage.

King Coconut Therapy

Indigenous to the island, the king coconut is also utilised for certain spa treatments in Kalutara. This can include a king coconut-based scrub for skin rejuvenation, compress for muscle restoration and massage for deeper relaxation. Local blog sites like Travel Kalutara offer more insights on such spa rituals in this destination.

Restorative Tea Journey

Sri Lanka is famed for its tea which is even used in some spa therapies. A warm tea bath soak is an ideal way to experience healing through the antioxidants in tea that are released; additionally, a revitalising green tea body scrub, detox wrap and body massage with essential oil help to bring that sense of complete wellbeing.

Any business meeting will not be productive and effective if you, as an attendee of the meeting do not adhere to proper meeting etiquette.

Be punctual, always!

If the business meeting is at 9.00 am, make sure you arrive at your meeting venue at least by 8.45 am. Even if you are in Colombo and the meeting is at a property like Anantara Kalutara Resort,  ensure you leave on time to get there in time. Today, travelling for events in Kalutara is not a big deal thanks to the Southern Expressway which saves you time like never before.

Be mindful about the agenda

It is the normal practice to email the agenda to all participants of the meeting at least a week in advance. So, as an attendee, make sure you know the timing of each segment of the meeting by going through the agenda you receive thoroughly.

Don’t let your phone interrupt everything

Before the meeting starts, always have your mobile phone switched off. This is one way to retain attention and also to show respect to the job in hand.

Pay attention till the end

For a successful business meeting, paying attention is one key requirement. Take notes if certain things tend to slip your mind.

When it comes to a place the whole family will enjoy, you can’t go wrong by choosing the beach! That said, there are some important things to keep in mind before your trip.

Beach Holiday

Find a Suitable Beach

Depending on where you live or plan to go on holiday, there may be more than one beach to choose from! For example, while Kalutara Beach, Sri Lanka is an ideal spot to enjoy laid-back fun, other south coast beaches featured on travel sites the likes of Travel Kalutara offer water sports options.

Pack the Essentials

Remember to pack all the essentials before you head to the beach in order to avoid hassles later on. Effective sunscreen is a must, while a beach blanket, fold-up chairs, sunglasses, extra towels, hats, umbrellas (just in case!) and even a first-aid pack are worth having on hand too.

Food and Drinks

Pack snacks and other food items because chances are after playtime, the kids are going to be famished! Remember to bring food that won’t melt and having it in Ziplock bags or separate boxes helps. A cool box / cooler is great to store drinks and water which are ideal to keep the family hydrated.

Items for Clean-up

A beach holiday might be fun but cleaning up can be messy especially since sand will get into all your clothing! Bring extra sets of clothes if possible and reusable plastic bags which can be used to keep wet clothes and rubbish / leftovers. Wet wipes, baby powder and dry towels are also handy to have.

The beach, be it in your home country or a foreign destination, is an ideal place for a family getaway. Here’s a quick guide on things you should keep in mind.

Find the Right Beach

Remember, not all beaches are created equal! Find one that has clean shores along with accommodation options too. For example, Kalutara Beach, Sri Lanka is an ideal beach to spend time at and online resources such as Travel Kalutara provide information on what you can do here and where to stay.

Check the Weather & Tides

Do check what the weather will be like when you plan to visit be it the temperature, humidity level or if there’s a chance of showers. Also, see what time the tide comes in and goes out and if the ocean is safe for swimming as well.

Pack the Essentials

Make sure to pack all the “essentials” for a beach holiday; these include swimsuits, sunhats, lots of sunscreen, sunglasses, a beach blanket, towels, toys, snacks and water / drinks. It also helps to have a waterproof dry bag to keep your phone, travel documents, camera, etc.

When It’s Time to Return

A beach may be a fun place to go to, but with all that sand and water it can be messy too. Take some reusable plastic bags to put wet or sand-filled clothes and other items. It’s useful to have hand sanitizer, tissues and wet wipes as well as a sperate bag to put any rubbish to dispose of properly.

In a world where marine species are severely threatened, it is heartening to see individuals making a difference; one such story is that of the Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project (KSTCP) in Sri Lanka.

Origins of the Project

This project was initiated by Dudley Perera in 1988 and he still runs it with the help of his family. Dudley who initially funded the project himself, continues his mission to protect local nesting sites, monitor turtle activity and spread the message of conservation. Local blog sites the likes of Travel Kalutara offer more information on this project.

Planning A Visit

KSTCP can be found along the Galle Road in the town of Kosgoda and is quite well known along the south coast. In fact, one of the popular things to do in Kalutara, Sri Lanka is to plan an excursion to this site which is generally open from 08:30am to 05:30pm.

What To Expect

At the KSTCP one can see the hatchery where collected and rescued eggs are kept safely till they hatch away from the threat of predators. Some of the hatchlings are temporarily kept at the sanctuary for a brief period before being released (the process is called “headstarting”). Depending on when you visit, you could also witness hatchlings being released out to sea! (there is no set date for releases, though it generally takes place at around 06:15pm)

Good to Know

For those curious to know what species of turtles can be found in Sri Lanka;

  • Olive Ridley Turtle
  • Green Turtle
  • Hawksbill Turtle
  • Leatherback Turtle
  • Loggerhead Turtle

What to Pack

Apart from swimwear, pack shorts, t-shirts, skirts, sandals and slippers, while sunglasses, sunscreen and sunhats will come in handy too. Do note, when going to religious sites you need to dress conservatively and cover bare shoulders and legs.

Popular attractions in Kalutara include the Kalutara Chaitya and Bodhiya and Richmond Castle, while fishing, river cruises and bike tours are amongst the activities on offer too.
